Porto begin the Champions League league phase at home after five consecutive domestic wins and just one goal conceded across that run. Yet Francesco Farioli has lost several players through the spine of his team just before facing Man City. Victor Froholdt will miss the match after a heavy collision against Moreirense, Jan Bednarek is suspended, while Samu and Zaidu are also unavailable. Farioli called City one of the favourites for the competition but stressed that Porto will not change their identity or usual approach.
Man City have also opened their league season with three straight wins under Enzo Maresca. The English side arrive at the Dragao as favourites on reputation, although their first matches of the new campaign have still required patience: the squad is being reshaped and attacking responsibilities are being shared between several new and familiar players.
Porto Form and xG
Porto's recent numbers are remarkably steady. Across their last five matches they have averaged 2.2 goals scored and only 0.2 conceded, creating 2.3 xG against 0.9 allowed. At home the balance is even tighter: 1.8 goals scored from 1.9 xG created and just 0.4 conceded from 0.7 allowed. Even in the latest game against Moreirense, when the opponent finally scored, Porto generated 3.16 xG and gave up only 0.95.
There is no major drop in chance quality against opponents of a similar level either. In matches with Stuttgart, Benfica and Sporting, Porto averaged 1.6 xG created against 1.2 allowed and did not lose once. The absences, however, affect several areas at the same time: Bednarek is missing from central defence, Froholdt from midfield and Samu removes one of Farioli's main options up front. Porto therefore have to redistribute key roles precisely for the toughest opponent of their opening stretch.
Man City Form and xG
Man City have won their first three league matches, although the wider five-game sample produces calmer averages: 1.8 goals scored from 1.9 xG created and 1.0 conceded from 1.4 allowed. Away from home they average 1.9 xG and allow 1.3, while scoring 1.8 goals. The 4:1 victory over Crystal Palace has been the standout result of the new start, whereas a single goal was enough against Coventry.
Opponents such as Crystal Palace, Chelsea, Villarreal, West Ham and Bournemouth allowed City to create an average of 1.9 xG, while generating 1.1 themselves. Maresca is still without Jeremy Doku, while Nico O'Reilly picked up a minor back issue before the last game and remains under observation. The attacking depth is still considerable: Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, Phil Foden and Antoine Semenyo give the coach several different combinations in the final third and between the lines.
xG Prediction and Correct Score
The teams are projected to produce 1.1 and 1.9 xG in Man City's favour, with the expected correct score at 1:2. That leaves the English side with an edge but does not point to a one-sided game: Porto create enough at home to threaten, while City do not always completely shut opponents out away from home.
The away win rests mainly on City's higher attacking ceiling and greater squad depth, particularly with Porto missing important players through the centre. Porto still have a route to goal through home pressure and set pieces, so both teams to score fits the expected flow of the match. If each side converts at least one opportunity, the third goal becomes a natural extension of City's attacking advantage and over 2.5 goals lands alongside the projected score. The older head-to-head meetings point in the same direction in terms of chance quality: across the two matches in 2020, Porto averaged only 0.4 xG compared with City's 2.0.
Porto vs Man City Expert Pick
The main selection deliberately keeps some protection compared with the model's more aggressive total. The bet is under 3.5 goals: a 1:2 scoreline still allows both teams to score and City to win without requiring an open shootout. Porto have consistently stayed within this line at home, while most of City's recent matches have also finished below it. The recommended stake size is available to Premium subscribers.
