Norway vs England: Prediction and Tips

The World Cup quarter-final in Miami brings together two teams that reached this stage through very different types of matches. Norway first came through a difficult group with France, Senegal and Iraq, then knocked out Brazil 2:1, with Erling Haaland scoring a late brace and taking his tournament tally to seven goals. England also had no calm route through the knockout stage: after a 2:1 comeback against DR Congo, Thomas Tuchel’s side survived the closing stages against Mexico and won 3:2, despite going down to ten men after Jarell Quansah’s red card. Against that background, the match quickly narrows into a duel between two attacking focal points: Haaland needs very few touches to change a game, while Harry Kane has already decided both knockout matches for England.

Norway form and xG

Norway’s last five matches look strong by results, but the xG numbers give a more nervous picture: 1.8 xG created and 1.6 xG conceded per game on average. The 2:1 win over Brazil was the headline result of the tournament, but Norway were behind on chance quality - 1.16 xG against 2.36. There was a similar gap against Ivory Coast: a 2:1 win with 1.79 xG and 1.52 conceded. Even in the victory over Senegal, Norway allowed the opponent to create 1.69 xG, so their defence does not look closed when the tempo rises. The similar-opponents sample makes the issue even clearer: against Brazil, the Netherlands, Austria, Scotland, Spain and Sweden, Norway conceded around 1.6 xG on average. One more factor is the squad condition: Solbakken admitted that some players had been dealing with cold symptoms, with Jorgen Strand Larsen among those who had not been feeling at his best.

England form and xG

England have held a steadier attacking level: across the last five matches, the team are creating almost 2.0 xG per game while conceding 0.9. Against Mexico, England won 3:2 with 1.58 xG, while the cleaner structural example came against DR Congo - 2:1 with 2.18 xG and only 0.74 for the opponent. Even the goalless match against Ghana was not empty in terms of chances: England produced 1.40 xG but failed to turn the edge into goals. The similar-opponents sample stands out most: against Croatia, Japan, Serbia, Belgium, Brazil and Senegal, England averaged more than 2.2 xG created and less than 1.0 conceded. There is a squad loss outside the core starting structure: Jordan Henderson is out for the rest of the tournament after breaking his arm while celebrating the win over Mexico. For the match structure, it matters more that the Rice - Bellingham - Kane connection remains available and gives England control between the lines.

xG prediction and expected score

The model’s expected score is 1.3:2.0 in xG in England’s favour. The xGscore prediction cards build one scenario: England to win, over 2.5 goals and both teams to score. The logic is not only about favourite status. England are better at breaking opponents through positional attacks and second-wave runs, while Norway, despite their strong attacking line, regularly allow chances even in matches they win. At the same time, fully shutting Norway down is difficult: Haaland has scored seven goals at the tournament, and his runs behind the defence can change an episode even without long spells of possession. That is why the model does not expect one-way control, but a match where England reach better shooting positions more often while Norway still keep a path to their own goal through direct delivery and quick attacks. The expected correct score is 1:2: England’s edge in class and attacking depth, but not a clean-sheet scenario.

Norway vs England betting tip

The final choice is built not around the full match total, but around England’s attack: Norway allow opponents too many high-quality entries, while England consistently create a strong volume of chances against teams of different levels. The bet is England team total over 1.5: it reflects the favourite’s xG edge more precisely and protects against a scenario where Norway’s contribution to the overall total is lower than expected.
