They can control the tempo not only through possession but also with their compact structure without the ball. For comparison, matches against similar opponents outside the current World Cup have also been included. Over the past five years, Spain have remained unbeaten in other competitions against the Netherlands, England, Italy, Germany and Portugal, averaging 1.5 xG for and 0.8 against. Argentina form and xG
Argentina have won all seven of their matches at the 2026 World Cup by a combined score of 19-7. They have averaged 2.0 xG, while their opponents have produced 0.7. The attack has scored more goals than expected from its total of 14.22 xG. Argentina scored three times against both Egypt and Switzerland in the knockout rounds, then generated only 1.63 xG in the semi-final and still secured the result they needed. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in five consecutive matches. Egypt and Cape Verde scored twice, while Switzerland and Jordan found the net once each. Argentina conceded seven goals across those five games despite allowing only 3.64 xG. The semi-final showed how difficult Lionel Scaloni's team are to contain until the final whistle, with Lionel Messi involved in both late goals against England.
Outside the current World Cup, Argentina's record against similar opponents over the past six years is less convincing. Against Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia, Brazil and Germany, their average xG figures were 1.0 for and 1.2 against. Argentina recorded three wins, two defeats and one draw in those matches. They did not produce a clear advantage in chance quality over this period. Patience, set pieces and Messi's individual quality could therefore take on particular importance.
