Spain vs Belgium: Prediction and Tips

The World Cup quarter-final in Los Angeles brings together two teams with very different knockout paths. Spain have not conceded since their goalless opening match against Cape Verde: after that came 4:0 against Saudi Arabia, 1:0 against Uruguay, 3:0 against Austria and a late 1:0 win over Portugal. Belgium, by contrast, reached this stage through more open football: draws with Egypt and Iran, 5:1 against New Zealand, 3:2 against Senegal and 4:1 against the United States. Against that background, Amadou Onana’s absence matters even more: the holding midfielder suffered an ACL tear in the previous match and is out for the rest of the tournament. For Belgium, that is a major blow in the area where Rodri, Pedri and Dani Olmo cannot be given extra time on the ball.

Spain form and xG

Spain’s last five matches show a rare mix of control and defensive security: almost 2.0 xG created and only 0.4 xG conceded per game on average. Against Portugal, Luis de la Fuente’s side won 1:0 with 1.68 xG and kept the opponent down to 0.73 xG, while the gap against Austria was even wider - 3:0 with 2.74 xG against 0.33. Even the goalless game against Cape Verde was not a poor performance by chance quality: Spain produced 2.25 xG but failed to turn pressure into goals. The similar-opponents sample points in the same direction: against Portugal and Uruguay, Spain won with clean sheets, and those two opponents combined for just over 1.0 xG. Cubarsi and Laporte missed part of training, but Spanish reports still expect them to be available, while Dani Olmo remains an important part of the starting structure next to Rodri and Pedri.

Belgium form and xG

Belgium have found attacking rhythm at the right time: four goals against the United States from 2.06 xG and five against New Zealand from 3.56 xG show how quickly this team can punish open space. But there are warning signs without the ball. Belgium beat Senegal 3:2 despite allowing 3.18 xG, and against Egypt they conceded 1.09 xG and failed to keep a clean sheet. Opponents closer to Spain’s level have also created regularly against Belgium in recent years: in matches with France, Italy and Germany, the visible similar-opponents sample has their average conceded xG at around 1.5. Losing Onana makes that issue sharper, because the double pivot will need more cover against Pedri and Olmo’s runs between the lines. At the same time, Doku, De Bruyne, Trossard and De Ketelaere still give Belgium enough quality to stretch the match if Spain leave space after losing the ball.

xG prediction and correct score

The model sees this match at 1.8:1.0 in expected xG in Spain’s favour. With that balance, the logical correct score from the prediction card is 2:0: Spain get the better chance quality, while Belgium run into the most reliable defence of the tournament. The other markets fit the same scenario: Spain to win, under 2.5 goals and both teams not to score. This is not a match built around constant pressure and chaos. Spain should have longer spells on the ball, look for overloads through their central trio and the wide threat of Lamine Yamal, while Belgium will find it harder to block the second wave of attacks after losing Onana. Going the other way, Belgium still have dangerous attackers, but against a team that has gone five straight matches without giving opponents clean looks at Unai Simon’s goal, they may need a near-perfect evening. That brings the markets together around a controlled Spain advantage and a limited number of clear scoring chances.

Spain vs Belgium betting tip

From the prediction markets, the most stable option here is not the total but the result: Spain defend better, create more consistently against strong opponents and now have a midfield advantage after Onana’s injury. The bet is Spain to win: that choice is supported by the xG edge, the defensive form and a match structure where Belgium may struggle to avoid gaps between the lines for long periods.
